Careers: Police Officer

Job Description:

Police officers find and apprehend criminals, write reports, direct traffic, investigate calls, provide help to citizens and keep the peace. They can specialize in certain fields within law enforcement, such as fingerprint identification, chemical analysis or firearms. They can also work with special units like the SWAT team or canine corps. No matter the specialty, this job requires someone who is tough both mentally and physically, observant, works well under pressure, enjoys helping people and does not mind working nights and holidays.

Education:

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or law enforcement is helpful in this career, although an associate's degree is often accepted. Both types of degrees can be obtained at an online college. Mental and physical exams are administered prior to entrance into the industry. Police offers attend a police academy where they endure physical training, take courses on constitutional law as well as learn first aid, traffic control and firearms. Background checks, lie detector tests, drug tests and personality examinations are also administered before one can become a police officer.

Compensation:
