Careers: Social Worker

Job Description:

Helping people is at the heart of a career in social work. Social workers help individuals and different groups of people find solutions to problems that interfere with the quality of their lives. Social workers also help connect these individuals to outside resources where they may obtain additional assistance. A career in social work calls for compassion, resourcefulness and use of good judgment.

Social workers are divided into different categories. Each category addresses the issues that are specific to a particular group of people. Mental health and substance abuse social workers provide help to those who suffer from mental illness and those who have a problem with drug or alcohol abuse. Child, family and school social workers assist individuals and families in resolving domestic, occupational and school-related issues. Medical and public health social workers provide assistance to individuals and families who are faced with their own illness or that of a loved one. Instead of working directly with the public, some social workers hold administrative positions. These positions involve the development of various policies and programs and the assessment of existing policies and programs to determine their effectiveness.

Social workers may be employed by certain types of facilities depending on their area of specialty. Child, family and school social workers may work for government agencies,
