The 411 on Work-Study Programs

Work-study programs are a great way to earn money for college expenses while gaining valuable work experience. Work-study program provide part-time jobs for students while the money earned helps pay for education-related expenses.

Administered as part of a student’s financial aid package, participation in a work-study program is based on eligibility. To begin the process, students should first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for a financial aid package. The FAFSA results will then be sent to the school the student indicated on the form.

A total work-study amount is awarded to each participating educational institution; it is up to the school to disburse the funds to students through the work-study program. According to the U.S. Dept of Education, the federal work-study program is available at “approximately 3,400 participating postsecondary institutions.”

Students can work only for the amount of their work-study award. Their job will be either on-campus or with an outside organization that has partnered with the school to provide jobs for work-study students. Work-study job are usually related to the degree students are pursuing and work hours should fit easily in their course schedule. Payment is usually an hourly rate that is no less than minimum wage.
